- <li>Version 3.0 of HotSync or greater, available as a free upgrade from Palm
- Computing: <a href="http://www.palm.com">http://www.palm.com</a>

- </ol>
- <p>The PalmOS version of BackupBuddy (<b><i>new!</i></b>) requires:</p>
- <ol>
- <li>Palm3.0 or better</li>
- <li>A modem (wired or wireless)</li>
- <li>Access to an Internet Service Provider</li>
- </ol>
-
- <h2><a name="Basic"></a>First-time installation</h2>
-
- <p>The first HotSync will perform a complete and
- fresh backup of your organizer. As a result, it may take a few minutes.. Rest assured that subsequent
- HotSyncs will proceed <i>significantly</i> more rapidly.</p>
-
- <p>If you don't see the BackupBuddy progress
- meters during HotSync, then you should make sure that:</p>
-
- <ol>
- <li>you restarted your computer (or restarted
- the HotSync Manager) after installation</li>
- <li>BackupBuddy's <em>Basic settings</em> are
- correct</li>
- <li>you have HotSync 3.0 or greater installed,
- as described above. </li>
- </ol>
-
- <p>Please consult the <i>Basic Settings</i> section
- in the included manual for more information (it is also copied to
- the BackupBuddy installation directory and is available from
- the BackupBuddy Program Group, accessible from the Windows
- "Start" menu). You can also access the manual by launching the
- BackupBuddy Configuration Manager and hitting the HELP button.</p>
-
- <p>Finally, the manual, as well as answers to
- Frequently Asked Questions are available and frequently updated
- on the support section of the BackupBuddy web site.</p>
-
- <h2><a name="Upgrade"></a>Upgrade Information</h2>
-
- <h3>BackupBuddyNG / BackupBuddy for Windows</h3>
-
- <p>If you're upgrading from an earlier release of BackupBuddy for Windows (also
- known as BackupBuddyNG), then you may simply install this release over the
- prior version (be sure to select the same installation directory
- you did previously). There is no need to uninstall the
- earlier version first. All your custom settings will be
- retained. If for some reason the upgrade fails to work, you
- should first remove BackupBuddy using the Windows Add/Remove
- Control Panel, then reinstall this release. The first time you
- HotSync after installing this release, BackupBuddy <em>may peform
- a complete backup.</em> <em>This is normal.</em> The subsequent
- HotSync will proceed much more quickly.</p>
-
- <h3>BackupBuddy/Classic</h3>
-
- <p>(e.g. BackupBuddy 3.04, or other)</p>
-
- <p>BackupBuddy for Windows is actually a totally new product
- and has been rewritten from "the ground-up". It <b>does
- not</b> require that you have the "BackupBuddy" program
- installed on your organizer. As such, you can remove it or
- leave on it your organizer. However, if you choose to leave
- it on your organizer, be aware that BackupBuddy for Windows does not respect or use
- any settings or changes you make on the organizer. All
- configuration of BackupBuddy for Windows is performed through the Configuration
- Manager, which is described in the accompanying manual.</p>
-
- <p>If, however, you decide to remove the old
- PalmPilot program from your organizer, you MUST make sure it is
- set to "Inactive" in the Basic settings screen, or that
- QuickSync is turned off, in the Advanced settings screen.
- Note: if you were using a trial version and it expired you
- do not have to disable it first - you can simply remove it from
- your handheld using the built-in PalmOS program launcher (please
- consult the documentation that came with your organizer if you're
- unsure how to delete programs).</p>
-
- <p>Additionally, if you were a registered user of
- BackupBuddy/Classic, and had the TrueSync conduit installed,
- prior to running BackupBuddy for the first time, you should
- first uninstall the BackupBuddy/TrueSync conduit:</p>
-
- <ol>
- <li>Launch the Windows Add/Remove control
- panel</li>
- <li>Select "BackupBuddy Uninstall"
- or "Uninstall BackupBuddy"</li>
- <li>Proceed with the installation as described
- above</li>
- </ol>
-
- <p>If you don't see the uninstall option in the
- control panel, you can either:</p>
-
- <ol>
- <li>Disable the old BackupBuddy conduit:
- click on the HotSync icon in the task bar, then click
- "Custom", click on "BackupBuddy" then
- click on "Change". This will make the old
- conduit inactive (assuming it was active prior to your
- doing this).</li>
- <li>Use RegEdit to remove the
- "ApplicationBBuddy" entry under
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop</li>
- </ol>
-
- <h2><a name="Uninstalling"></a>Uninstalling BackupBuddy for Windows:</h2>
-
- <p>If you decide that you don't like BackupBuddy for Windows and would like to uninstall it, you should use the Windows
- Add/Remove program to perform the uninstallation. You will
- then need to restart the HotSync manager or your desktop
- computer. </p>
-
- <p><strong>Note:</strong> the BackupBuddy
- installer is built using Wise Solutions' InstallMaker.
- During uninstallation, it may attempt to call a Windows DLL
- file called CTL3D32.DLL. If you have an incompatible
- version installed on your Desktop computer, it may report an
- error. You can safely ignore the error by clicking
- "OK" in the dialog that appears - the uninstallation
- will then proceed properly.</p>
-
- <h2><a name="Checkboxes"></a>Trouble with
- check-boxes in the Configuration Manager</h2>
-
- <p>If you're having difficulty getting the check-boxes
- to work properly in the Configuration Manager, the problem may be
- with comctl32.dll. You should download and install the
- latest version from Microsoft's web site: <a
- href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/developer/downloads/files/40comupd.htm">http://msdn.microsoft.com/developer/downloads/files/40comupd.htm</a></p>

- </ul>
-
- <h2>1.1</h2>
-
- <ul>
- <li><em>Installer</em>: <br>

- for first-time users.<br>
- -No longer requires reboots after installation<br>
- -Misc. other changes</li>
- <li><em>Configuration Manager</em>: <br>
- -ToolTips and Online Help support (particularly nice for
- those with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or above)<br>
- -Can now use the space-bar to select/deselect files in
- the exclude box<br>
- -A "clear all" button has been added to
- deselect all files in the exclude box<br>
- -Prior to this release, updating the Palm Desktop
- software would corrupt BackupBuddy's registry settings.
- The configuration manager is now able to detect this, and
- launching it after upgrading the destkop software will
- repair BackupBuddy's registry settings.</li>
- <li><em>BackupBuddy</em>: minor changes and
- full compatibility verified for the PalmVII and PalmOS3.3</li>
- </ul>
-
- <h2>1.07</h2>
-
- <ul>
- <li>Performance improvements when backing up
- large-capacity devices (e.g. users of TRG memory board
- products)</li>
- </ul>
-
- <h2>1.06</h2>
-
- <ul>
- <li> Two minor new tweaks
- added:</li>
- <li> <ol>
- <li>Ability to completely disable
- BackupBuddy from running during modem-based
- HotSync's (new Configuration Manager option).</li>
- <li>BackupBuddy is now a bit smarter
- about knowing that your unit was hard-reset, and
- will perform a <em>very</em> speedy backup
- after your files have been restored. <strong>Note</strong>:
- BackupBuddy will be unable to do this if: 1) you
- have selected the option <em>Backup Unsaved
- Preferences</em>, because when the Unsaved
- Preferences.PRC file is restored to the handheld,
- the function call that tells BackupBuddy that the
- device was reset gets confused 2) you are
- restoring with the <em>Desktop overwrites
- Handheld</em> option - again this is because the <em>Unsaved
- Preferences</em> file is already on the device</li>
- </ol>
- </li>
- <li>Verified full compatibility with <a
- href="http://www.trgnet.com/catalog.htm">FlashPro</a>, from <a href="http://www.trgnet.com">TRG</a>.</li>
- </ul>
-
- <h2>1.05</h2>
-
- <p> Implemented changes for <a
- href="http://www.palm.com/software/pilosoft.html">Platinum
- Certification</a> - not publicly released</p>
-
- <ol>
- <li>Better error detection and recovery under
- low RAM and disk-space conditions, as well as ability to
- recover from a lost connection (if Pilot is pulled from
- the cradle).</li>
- <li>Minor UI tweaks</li>
- <li>Uninstaller now removes BB preferences
- files for each user when BB/NG is uninstalled</li>
- <li>Flash-ROM backup tweaks for compatibility
- with the PalmIIIx and PalmV - if you had a prior version
- of BB/NG installed and enabled FlashROM backup you may
- have two extraneous files in your ROM_Files directory,
- "NetSync.PRC" and "Setup.PRC".
- These can be deleted.</li>
- <li>Platinum testing: passed.</li>
- </ol>
-
- <h2>1.04</h2>
-
- <ol>
- <li>Added option to backup "Unsaved
- Preferences" database. Per communication with
- 3Com, upcoming OS revisions (e.g. 3.1 and later) may not
- support the restoration of this database (hence it's
- name), and may cause a fatal exception during a restore
- if this database is found in the backup directory.
- As such, by default, BBNG does <strong>not</strong>
- backup this database.</li>
- <li>Backup of conduit databases - the meaning
- of this option has been changed somewhat in this
- release. If disabed, BBNG will only skip databases
- that are mapped to the built-in Palm applications (e.g.
- Memo, Address, ToDo, Datebook, Expense, and Mail) as some
- applications require their databases (that are
- synchronized against conduits) to actually be backed up
- (e.g. QMate) to enable a proper restore.</li>
- </ol>
-
- <h2>1.03</h2>
-
- <ol>
- <li>Obscure problem with backing up TRG
- FlashROM files fixed: if a user had a copy of a
- file in FlashROM and a copy also in RAM, and the files
- had different version numbers, neither would be properly
- backed up.</li>
- <li>New installation package (Wise Solutions)
- used:<br>
- -Some users complained InstallShield was incompatible
- with their particular Windows configuration<br>
- -New installer is significantly smaller<br>
- -Simplified uninstallation: entirely done through
- the Windows Add/Remove control panel (ie. no need to run
- the supplied uninstall program first)</li>
- <li>Some minor changes to the manual</li>
- </ol>
-
- <h2>1.02</h2>
-
- <ol>
- <li>Although the files would restore correctly
- in the eventuality of a hard-reset, a minor
- incompatibility between generated "PDB"
- databases and J-File utilities (e.g. jconv, etc) was
- found and fixed. </li>
- </ol>
-
- <h2>1.01</h2>
-
- <ol>
- <li>Significantly lower memory usage,
- particularly when backing up large PDBs</li>
- <li>Changed algorithm used for mapping PalmOS
- database names to Windows file names, to be more
- compatible with the default System conduit. This
- avoids duplicate files being created in the backup
- directory for handheld files containing certain
- punctuation symbols</li>
- <li>A reported problem on Windows95/98 with
- FlashBuilder/PRC and BBNG generating an error when moving
- files between the Backup directory and ROM_Files
- directory has been fixed.</li>
- <li>Added option to configuration
- manager: "Skip QuickSheet
- databases". If you're a QuickSheet user PLEASE
- READ THE RELEVANT SECTION IN THE MANUAL BEFORE ENABLING
- THIS OPTION!</li>
- </ol>
