  45. <p>The PalmOS version of BackupBuddy (<b><i>new!</i></b>) requires:</p>

  52. <h2><a name="Basic"></a>First-time installation</h2>
  53.  
  54. <p>The first HotSync will perform a complete and
  55. fresh backup of your organizer.  As a result, it may take a few minutes..  Rest assured that subsequent
  56. HotSyncs will proceed <i>significantly</i> more rapidly.</p>
  57.  
  58. <p>If you don't see the BackupBuddy progress
  59. meters during HotSync, then you should make sure that:</p>
  60.  
  61. <ol>
  62.     <li>you restarted your computer (or restarted
  63.         the HotSync Manager) after installation</li>
  64.     <li>BackupBuddy's <em>Basic settings</em> are
  65.         correct</li>
  66.     <li>you have HotSync 3.0 or greater installed,
  67.         as described above. </li>
  68. </ol>
  69.  
  70. <p>Please consult the <i>Basic Settings</i> section
  71. in the included manual for more information (it is also copied to
  72. the BackupBuddy installation directory and is available from
  73. the BackupBuddy Program Group, accessible from the Windows
  74. "Start" menu).  You can also access the manual by launching the
  75. BackupBuddy Configuration Manager and hitting the HELP button.</p>
  76.  
  77. <p>Finally, the manual, as well as answers to
  78. Frequently Asked Questions are available and frequently updated
  79. on the support section of  the BackupBuddy web site.</p>
  80.  
  81. <h2><a name="Upgrade"></a>Upgrade Information</h2>
  82.  
  83. <h3>BackupBuddyNG / BackupBuddy for Windows</h3>
  84.  
  85. <p>If you're upgrading from an earlier release of BackupBuddy for Windows (also
  86. known as BackupBuddyNG), then you may simply install this release over the
  87. prior version (be sure to select the same installation directory
  88. you did previously).  There is no need to uninstall the
  89. earlier version first.  All your custom settings will be
  90. retained.  If for some reason the upgrade fails to work, you
  91. should first remove BackupBuddy using the Windows Add/Remove
  92. Control Panel, then reinstall this release. The first time you
  93. HotSync after installing this release, BackupBuddy <em>may peform
  94. a complete backup.</em> <em>This is normal.</em> The subsequent
  95. HotSync will proceed much more quickly.</p>
  96.  
  97. <h3>BackupBuddy/Classic</h3>
  98.  
  99. <p>(e.g. BackupBuddy 3.04, or other)</p>
  100.  
  101. <p>BackupBuddy for Windows is actually a totally new product
  102. and has been rewritten from "the ground-up".  It <b>does
  103. not</b> require that you have the "BackupBuddy" program
  104. installed on your organizer.  As such, you can remove it or
  105. leave on it your organizer.  However, if you choose to leave
  106. it on your organizer, be aware that BackupBuddy for Windows does not respect or use
  107. any settings or changes you make on the organizer. All
  108. configuration of BackupBuddy for Windows  is performed through the Configuration
  109. Manager, which is described in the accompanying manual.</p>
  110.  
  111. <p>If, however, you decide to remove the old
  112. PalmPilot program from your organizer, you MUST make sure it is
  113. set to "Inactive" in the Basic settings screen, or that
  114. QuickSync is turned off, in the Advanced settings screen. 
  115. Note:   if you were using a trial version and it expired you
  116. do not have to disable it first - you can simply remove it from
  117. your handheld using the built-in PalmOS program launcher (please
  118. consult the documentation that came with your organizer if you're
  119. unsure how to delete programs).</p>
  120.  
  121. <p>Additionally, if you were a registered user of
  122. BackupBuddy/Classic, and had the TrueSync conduit installed,
  123. prior to running BackupBuddy for the first time, you should
  124. first uninstall the BackupBuddy/TrueSync conduit:</p>
  125.  
  126. <ol>
  127.     <li>Launch the Windows Add/Remove control
  128.         panel</li>
  129.     <li>Select "BackupBuddy Uninstall"
  130.         or "Uninstall BackupBuddy"</li>
  131.     <li>Proceed with the installation as described
  132.         above</li>
  133. </ol>
  134.  
  135. <p>If you don't see the uninstall option in the
  136. control panel, you can either:</p>
  137.  
  138. <ol>
  139.     <li>Disable the old BackupBuddy conduit: 
  140.         click on the HotSync icon in the task bar, then click
  141.         "Custom", click on "BackupBuddy" then
  142.         click on "Change".  This will make the old
  143.         conduit inactive (assuming it was active prior to your
  144.         doing this).</li>
  145.     <li>Use RegEdit to remove the
  146.         "ApplicationBBuddy" entry under
  147.         HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop</li>
  148. </ol>
  149.  
  150. <h2><a name="Uninstalling"></a>Uninstalling BackupBuddy for Windows:</h2>
  151.  
  152. <p>If you decide that you don't like BackupBuddy for Windows and would like to uninstall it, you should use the Windows
  153. Add/Remove program to perform the uninstallation.  You will
  154. then need to restart the HotSync manager or your desktop
  155. computer. </p>
  156.  
  157. <p><strong>Note:</strong> the BackupBuddy
  158. installer is built using Wise Solutions' InstallMaker. 
  159. During uninstallation, it may attempt to call a Windows DLL
  160. file called CTL3D32.DLL.  If you have an incompatible
  161. version installed on your Desktop computer, it may report an
  162. error.  You can safely ignore the error by clicking
  163. "OK" in the dialog that appears - the uninstallation
  164. will then proceed properly.</p>
  165.  
  166. <h2><a name="Checkboxes"></a>Trouble with
  167. check-boxes in the Configuration Manager</h2>
  168.  
  169. <p>If you're having difficulty getting the check-boxes
  170. to work properly in the Configuration Manager, the problem may be
  171. with comctl32.dll.  You should download and install the
  172. latest version from Microsoft's web site: <a
